Community Garden

The Community Garden of Gorham United Methodist Church provides fresh fruits and vegetables to members of our congregation and children and families in our neighboring community. With 2000 square feet of gardening space we are able to provide locally grown fruits and vegetables for our community.

The establishment of the Community Garden is the foundation for our much larger Healthy Eating/Healthy Living campaign. Our goal has been to be all encompassing, addressing the issues of food security, obesity and other co-morbidities such as type II diabetes and hypertension that disproportionally impact the African American population. In the long term, we hope to change the relationship between our people and food, for the better.

In addition, the Community Garden allows us to implement job training opportunities for our young adults through our summer youth program. Participants in our job training program are involved in planting, maintaining and harvesting the garden. The participants are required to learn about the vegetables that are being grown, plant care to maximize vegetable yields and sustainability of the garden through composting and organic practices. The Community Garden puts the community directly in touch with healthy food and helps to gain an understanding of how healthy food nurtures and sustains us.
